Hockney shines At LACMA
I’m so excited about the David Hockney exhibit, <strong>82 Portraits and 1 Still-life, which will be on view at LACMA through July 29, 2018. As a LACMA member/donor and a Hockney fan, this is a win-win–plus the show is there long enough for at least a couple of leisurely visits.
Last year, I took the Joyce Rey Team to see the dazzling Happy Birthday, Mr. Hockney exhibit at the Getty Center and was exceptionally pleased to be invited by my friend Barbara Bollenbach to David’s fabulous 80th Birthday Dinner at the Getty. While that two-part exhibit focused on self-portraits and Hockney’s iconic photographs, the LACMA show turns the artist’s eye outward, onto a pantheon of friends, family, and other acquaintances. For each portrait, a single individual sits relaxed in a chair before a background of swimming-pool hues. In his ninth decade, Mr. Hockney has lost none of his mastery of color!
In the early 1990s, I attended a magnificent fundraiser hosted by David Murdoch in his trophy Bel Air estate. The event benefitted our beloved Music Center and David Hockney generously donated a lithograph to the live auction. I was the lucky bidder–another win-win–and the artwork is a treasure of my collection.
The show at LACMA is the only United States presentation of this exhibit, which originated at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Don’t miss it!
