Finding Gold in Santa Monica
Whether you have lived on L.A.’s Westside for a lifetime, are a new arrival, or have only visited now and then, you have probably experienced that glossy bit of State Route 1 known as the Gold Coast. Perhaps you spent summers on Sorrento Beach, or played volleyball in the sand on Santa Monica Beach, or drove up and down the California Incline. Maybe you’ve attended events at the Annenberg
Community Beach House or gazed down at the sunset, the sea, the sand, and the houses from the bluffs of Palisades Park.
Whatever your perspective on this privileged stretch of coastline, Santa Monica’s Gold Coast is a veritable who’s-who of Hollywood star power (Darryl Zanuck>, Norma Shearer, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, Louis B. Mayer, and many more) and architectural dignitaries (Julia Morgan, Wallace Neff, Richard Neutra, Paul Williams, and others). This was the landscape of memorable summers with legendary parties. Its fame rose and fell and rose again.
If the Gold Coast was part of your history – or perhaps it’s part of your current life – you’ll no doubt be interested in having another look at this fascinating article in Curbed L.A.
